यह तीर्थ कुरुक्षेत्र भूमि के सोम तीर्थों में से एक है। महाभारत में इसे सोम लोक प्रदाता कहा गया है। वामन पुराण में इसमें स्नान करने का महत्त्व महाभारत के समान ही कहा है। इससे स्पष्ट है कि यह अति महत्वपूर्ण तीर्थ रहा होगा। इसी पुराण के अनुसार सोम तीर्थ में स्नान करने से राजसूर्य यज्ञ के फल की प्राप्ति होती है और रोग और दोष नष्ट हो जाते हैं। प्राचीन काल में यहाँ तेरह तपस्वी साधुओं ने जीवित समाधि ली थी जिससे ही इस ग्राम का नाम समाना प्रसिद्ध हुआ।

In the Mahabharata, this tirtha has been called provider of Som Lok or the world of Som deity. The importance of taking sacred bath here has been described same in the Vaman Puran and Mahabharata. According to the Vaman Puran, bathing in the Som tirtha provides the merits of performing Rajsuya yajna. The sacred bath here also destroys the diseases and defects of the devotees. It is said that thirteen saints had taken alive Samadhi here in the past.
