नवग्रहों को समर्पित कुण्डों में से एक तीर्थ
जनश्रुतियों के अनुसार महाभारत युद्ध में हुए जनसंहार से क्षुब्द युधिष्ठिर ने भगवान श्रीकृष्ण के परामर्श पर कुरु भूमि में नौ ग्रहों को समर्पित पवित्र कुण्डों का निर्माण करवाया था जिनमें से यह कुण्ड सूर्य कुण्ड कहलाता है। कैथल नगर के अन्य आठ ग्रह कुण्ड सूर्य कुण्ड के चारों दिशाओं में बने हुए थे। नवग्रहों से जुड़े होने के कारण कैथल नगर को छोटी काशी भी कहा जाता है। इस तीर्थ पर अष्टकोण बुर्जियों वाले उत्तर-मध्यकालीन स्नान घाट बने हुए हैं। तीर्थ परिसर में नवग्रहों को समर्पित एक मन्दिर भी बना हुआ है। ज्येष्ठ और आषाढ़ माह में यहां मातृ देवियों की पूजा की जाती है। पूर्व में यहां कार्तिक माह में पवित्र स्नान की परंपरा रही है।
Surya Kund Kaithal
One of the kunds dedicated to the nine planets
According to folklore, Yudhishthira, who was upset by the massacre of many heroes in the Mahabharata war, had constructed sacred Kunds dedicated to the nine planets in the land of Kurukshetra on the advice of Lord Krishna. Out of these nine Kundas, this Kund is know as Surya Kund. The other eight Kunds related to the planets of Kaithal town were built in the four cardinal directions of Surya Kund. Kaithal town is also called Choti Kashi due to its association with the nine planets. Late medieval bathing ghats with octagonal towers have been built at this tirtha.
